One of my most exciting opportunities to advocate was when I was asked to say a few words at a rally with Rev. William Barber. Even more exciting was when he took my hand and gave it a sweet kiss in appreciation. I was one of many speakers that day on the steps of the capital building but I was the only one who got a sweet hand kiss.
Good afternoon. My name is, Tina Jackson. I am a disability self- advocate, and member of the Kentuckians for the commonwealth.
When I learned that the Poor People’s campaign was getting a new breath of life, I was very excited. I am excited that the focus, in 2018, is truly, an inclusive effort. The Poor People’s March in 1968 in DC with doctor King, was mainly focused on the needs of African Americans and rightly so.
Today we are again in a serious crossroads of danger, which could negatively impact the life of ordinary people be it white, disabled, black, and the working poor.
We ordinary folks have a secret weapon with our votes. We can make our voices heard loudly and clearly. We need to be actively involved in selecting candidates to run who are able to understand our need for better jobs, bhousing, keep our health care intact and our environment safe, and keep, our pristine land, safe from the corporate greed. Then, campaign for those candidates.
Martin Luther King, Jr. once said.”we may have came over on different ships, but we are in the same boat now.”
Another one of my heroes , Helen Keller said, “alone we can do so little, but together we can do, so much.
